Cochineal, Aleppo galls, Annatto, Indigo, Ochres, and Iron Oxides are examples of naturally occurring pigments. Since ancient times, these natural pigments have been utilized as coloring agents. These pigments, which are utilized in cosmetics, are obtained from insects and plants. They have a preference for any food or medication that has to have color additions.
Natural pigments work well in a variety of products, including shampoo, soap, lotion, bath salts, bath bombs, and shower gel. These pigments are water dispersible and have good soap bleed protection properties. However, these pigments don't have a lot of light intensity.
Natural Inorganic Pigments
- Anthocyanin Pigments
Anthocyanin pigments are colorful pigments that are widely distributed across the plant kingdom. These pigments provide the hues of blue, red, and purple. These pigments also add color to fruits and flowers, giving them their hue. Water solubility makes anthocyanins easy to extract from plant materials. The extraction of these pigments requires water that has been slightly acidified.
- Carotenoid Pigments
Yellow to red is the color spectrum of carotenoids. The carotenoid pigments are extracted using a 1:3 combination of acetone and hexane. Water is used to wash off the acetone layer from the recovered carotenoid pigments. Hexane residue can be eliminated by treating it with a diatomaceous earth column that has been activated with MgO2. The leftover acetone and hexane can likewise be eliminated in this manner.
